What makes a top vacation rental in Raleigh?
We love using vacation rentals over hotels because you typically get more for your money. We prefer to use VRBO as our choice of rental company, as they are transparent about their fees and have excellent customer support. We no longer use Airbnb because they don’t have the quality control that VRBO does (in our experience).
When looking for a vacation rental, it’s always good to make sure it comes with access to a full kitchen (saving you money on eating out), separate bedrooms and privacy (perfect for families), a living room for relaxing in, and a washer and dryer (saves you on laundry).
It’s also important to check the neighborhood and ensure it’s safe and where all the action is. Staying in a vacation rental allows you to feel like a local, and features many of the comforts of a home-away-from-home. When we think of the best vacation rentals in Raleigh, we feel they must meet the following criteria:
- Be an entire place (not a room or shared home)
- Has an instant book / instant confirmation
- Self check-in (a bonus but not essential)
- A separate bedroom (studios are fine for one person)
- At least one bathroom for every two people
- A fully equipped kitchen
- Air conditioning & Heating
- A washer/dryer
- TV
- Free WiFi (preferably fast)
- Smoke alarm
- Free parking
We think the best area to stay in Raleigh for visitors is downtown Raleigh and inside the beltline (interstate I-440 that circles the city).
By staying close to downtown Raleigh, you are convenient to all the best things to do in Raleigh including the best restaurants, bars, breweries, museums, coffee shops, entertainment venues like Lenovo Center (formerly PNC Arena, and of course NC State University!
Questions to ask your host in Raleigh
If this is your first time staying in a vacation rental, from our personal experience there are some initial basic details to confirm with your host ahead of your date of stay. And always communicate with your host before and during your stay:
- Is it self check-in or will you be meeting us on arrival? If not you, then what is their name?
- If self check-in, will you text or email us the instructions?
- How many sets of keys will I get? Or is there an entrance code? Important if you have multiple travelers arriving at different times.
- Do you live nearby?
- Where do we park? Is it by permit? Any restrictions?
- If you are physically challenged, ask: What floor are you on? Is there an elevator?
- Is the Wi-Fi reliable? Important for business travelers like us!
- Is there anything about your place that families with kids/babies should know?
- Review the cancellation policy – the level of strictness varies by each property, so make sure you understand what you’re agreeing to and what flexibility there is if you need to cancel or change your dates.
